Houses Are GrossUser Forum Topic
Submitted by scaredycat on February 17, 2009 - 12:06pm
Setting aside economic considerations, it has been my feeling lately that houses are kind of gross. Well, the houses I have lived in the last 10 years are gross. Maybe it's just the depressed times we live in, but our current house just seems foul. We have rats int he garage, and they were living under the house too. The floor is kind of creaky and it's an old manufactured home that just doesn't seem like it will last. the stove is messed upand the landlord is dragging his feet. It has a great view and everything, but that's not the house, that's just where the house is. The walls are of course hollow and rats and mice can live in there. We had a place 8-9 years ago that just had hordes of cockroaches living outside, with some inside. Weird. I mean like HORDES outside. in all the discussion about housing economics, it sometimes strike sme thata house can be a disgusting thing. I would prefer a house made of adobe, with no space in the walls, and a toilet outside the house, preferably a composting toilet. And no rats. And perhaps a thatched roof. It's kind of neat when they go up in value, but it doesn't negate the fact for me that most houses are somewhat repulsive living arrangements.

Rats and bugs are edible. Consider them emergency rations in case the economy completely tanks as well as the government and you run out of canned food.
Gross ...and..inside houses kids pick their noses and you know they haven't been anywhere near a box of tissues and yet the bugger can't be found.IT'S IN THE HOUSE! AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!
This made my day. Thank you. :D

right
I am laughing my a** off, too
the cockroaches are good fried, but how shoudl i prepare rat?
Roasted on a spit, after you kill it. Remember parts is parts.
Whenever my wife finds a spider in the house, I explain to her that spiders eat flies. I ask her, "which would you rather have, spiders or flies?"
I heard this on the radio today, but could only find a couple of quotes on the Internet about food shortages.
"ZBIGNIEW BRZEZINSKI: I was worrying about it because we’re going to have millions and millions of unemployed, people really facing dire straits. And we’re going to be having that for some period of time before things hopefully improve. And at the same time there is public awareness of this extraordinary wealth that was transferred to a few individuals at levels without historical precedent in America . . . And you sort of say to yourself: what’s going to happen in this society when these people are without jobs, when their families hurt, when they lose their homes, and so forth?"

Real Estate Sucks!!!
It is a depreciating asset that constantly needs work
Historically, it is one of the best ways of creating wealth but the actual ownership, management and maintenance sucks
Now a tasty fried cockroach, that's a different story - I like my blackened, cajun style!
I'll take flies any day over spiders.

I agree
i love spiders and always let them live when they take up residence at my place.
I am thinking about starting to farm and eat insects. check out "mealworms" and food on the internet. fascinating!
Flies sit on poop, then move and land on you. I'll take spiders. They live up off the ground.
This thread makes me chuckle.
(And I'll take spiders... but if they're too obtrusive I'll "relocate" them to outside.)
I'm surprised no one has mentioned mold.
I rented a place in PB, when we moved.. behind our bed the whole wall was moldy, just the area where our bed was.. when we moved clothes out of our closet where we mostly stored winter clothes, extra blankets, etc.. the clothes, blankets.. moldy.. back of that closet.. full of mold, it was crazy
Blue green algae, yes, mold no. Although I did find an edible mold blog:

I once had a pet spider that I named Ricky. The maid killed Ricky when I wasnt home. She didnt understand the delicate balance of life. I was bummed.
Poop won't kill you, but spiders can kill you if you get bitten. Ever see what a brown recluse spider can do? If you haven't seen it, Google it and you might change your mind.

WARNING: it is pretty graphic!
Even the mere mention of the bogey man means he's just right there behind you. In the case of mold really its all around you, but you get the idea.
Josh
although "you gotta live somewhere" is true, it's also true that 'it's greta to move if your place is too disgusting". cavemen abandonned their caves when they got too stinky, didn't they? Why should i have to stay in my place after someone throws up on the carpet? Mold, vomit, earthquake damage, vermin, insects, entropy, kid's boogers -- well, I can live with kids boogers; the freedom to be able to leave is highly undervalued!
Makes you wonder how a mold growing, rat infested roach motel with deteriorating granite counter tops, fading paint, stained steel appliances, and rotting hardwood floors can ever appreciate in value.
Don't forget termites - they're high in protein and have a slightly minty taste.
seriously though, if you're going to eat insects around the house, please be careful never to lay down pesticides, and be sure to eat only nsects from your own hosue, to make sure you don't pick up any of your neighbors' pesticides.

Ok, An, I googled it and first thing I learned was that the brown recluse spider lives in the SE. Not a threat here in CA. I will still take the poop-free spiders over the poop trodding flies anyday! And anyone who wants to eat poop over a spider is just crazy.
I guess to each their own. Brown recluse is not nearly as deadly as black widow and we have those here in the SW. Brown recluse actually are moving west... I think as far as Arizona. You can't die from eating poop spec from flies, but you can die from getting bitten by a black widow, especially if you're a baby. I chose life over dirty food.
Ya check out the men's bathroom at South Mission beach. When you walk in, look up. The ceiling is covered with black widows, webs, and egg sacks.
I will certify that Temecula is absolutely 100% infested with Black Widows - I go on hunts at least 3-4 times a week to keep them under control.
They are of course native to the valley, but as I understand the wineries really pump up their numbers.
As an expert in eradicating Black Widows, I have never seen one make a nest at ceiling height. Black Widows in my experience make their nests/webs lower to the ground - occasionally I will see them 3-4 feet off the ground but never much higher.
They are easy to spot at night with a white LED flashlight.
Also, Black Widows are VERY GOOD at detecting threats - you have to be fast.
I have seen many larger than a 1/2 dollar coin.
Black widows are in the hood. My tenant has them, and we use pest control sometimes, she has animals, so it is not so usual. They come in the garage and have orange spots on their bodies. I have seen them at work too.
