High Speed Internet for Seasonal ResidentUser Forum Topic
Submitted by Happs on August 26, 2011 - 11:44pm
I currently use AT&T's DSL service for my internet connection in San Diego. I subscribed over 4 years ago when it was $10/month and now the price has increased to about $20/month. It's inexpensive, but the speed and reliability of the connection isn't as good as cable modem service. I only use the service 4 months out of the year, but still pay for the 8 months of the year I am not in town because I don't see any option on the website for DSL only customers to put the service on a vacation hold. I have Cox high speed internet at my primary residence and am very happy with it. It's $55/month but since there are family members at my primary residence using it daily when I am away, I never inquired or researched a vacation hold option. Which high speed internet company in San Diego is both reasonably priced and offers service holds for seasonal residents?

Your best bet is to go with Cox's high speed internet and when you are done after 4 months disconnect it and then when you come back 8 months later do a self install for $20.
Thanks for the suggestion, but I read that Cox doesn't offer a "vacation" or seasonal plan in California.

Get a wifi hotspot from tmobile or similar company. 4G (really a fast 3G), 5 connections, pay as you go, no monthly plan. Plus you can take it anywhere else you vacation.
We have one from Verizon, but without a monthly plan you run up a bill pretty fast. You'd have to figure out how much usage you'd have and figure it out. And you will easily max out even on the 5G monthly plan if you watch any streaming video or play games.
I don't have a smartphone, but it looks like AT&T DSL and Cox have a stronghold on the high speed internet marketplace in San Diego.
I was not talking seasonal saver or vacation disconnect. Do a full disconnect, then just reconnect under the self install plan. Will probably have to give a couple of days notice on the reconnect however as they have to actually drive out and reconnect it outside.
Make friends with your neighbor in SD. Get a WiFi extender. Once a year, buy neighbor good bottle of wine in exchange for guest WiFi password.
