They now say that the fires were set intentionally. One can't help speculating. Was it an act of terrorism? Or maybe some guy facing foreclosure wants vengence or something?? Definitely possible!
I hope the asshats posting above me are engaging in a little of what's known as "black humor" to assuage their stress. Otherwise, I can't believe they'd be making fun of this situation. Are you guys new to San Diego County? These fires are one of the risks you take in living in Southern California. I have been through a dozen of these, and they are NOT funny. Half of the staff at the company I work for could not come in today because they were RENTERS being evacuated from such lofty communities as Lakeside and Rancho Penasquitos. You think these people don't have kids, pets, important papers, photo albums? Make fun of people for signing the papers for stupid loans, not for a natural catastrophe.
If some of the fires *were* arson, I suspect they might have been set by financially strung out builders and speculators to cover individual acts of arson.
I'm not saying thats what happened, but speculating on a possible motive if some of the fires were deliberately set.
Stuff like this used to happen in my previous area (New Jersey) not infrequently.
Edit: I didn't read the opening two posts as being 'funny' at all.

Before anyone gets too deep into bubblemania, these wild fires have been regular occurrence for Centuries. Remember San Francisco, Chicago fires? And yes, there were and will be wild fires in both bubble and non-bubble areas with or without arsonists.

If any of you non conspiracy minded folks know any fire fighting personnel, buy em a beer then just ask them HONESTLY how many arson fires have been set over the last 2-4 yrs in SoCal.....You'll shit your pants when you find out the truth ! Im not talking about torching somebodies little house either, I mean full on REAL WILD FIRES....
A LOT of fire fighters ARE actual "Fire bugs"...believe it or not....An LA County Arson Investigator was CAUGHT setting fires...many of them too...BIG fires...over many years...You might find something if you google it up.
Its NO CONSPIRACY....its the facts people
Remember who started the HUGE AZ fire a few years ago ?.....A "recently cut" fire fighter..the biggest fire EVER in AZ history, they caught him and he admitted it. Fire hazard was low that year and he decided to single handedly get his job back.....How about the weird, scorned woman in Colorado who was a firefighter also and who started a HUGE one up there a few weeks later that year ?...They are like weirdo, pshyco cops....its not reported so as not to shake the confidence of the citizens trusts of the civil protection service people, I guess.
Sure, this comes every season with the Santa Ana's...but dont think for a second that 13 separate fires didnt just start all by themselves in a space of 3 hours with no lightning storms, downed power lines, brush burn off fires or anything.....There are many cheap and easy ways for these weirdos to set a timed delay firestorm
Some of you people live in disneyland when it comes to reality....And NO its not funny...but its true, deal with it. Why dont you look it up instead of criticizing the poster ?...Education is a wonderful thing
I understand and believe what you are saying, but what are we little folks supposed to do in the meantime before they find out who did this? That is the IMMEDIATE question. Please give suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Lesbo Fire Chiefs and SUndry...
funny? No. Not funny.
Asshat? Easy with the name calling.
It's a catastrophic event. Sometimes these are "engineered"... sometimes just by the nutty, sometimes by folks w/ power and quasi-unfathomable amounts of $$$.
Acres upon acres of tinder burning... can happen naturally.
The fire chief is a lesbian who caused a sexual harrassment lawsuit.
“While I was sitting there waiting for the parade to start, I felt that I was forced against my will to be at the Gay Pride Parade and forced to see men in tight shorts dancing provocatively and other men kissing and hugging wearing sexually suggestive material on T-shirts with writing 'Girth and Mirth,' 'Suit Up Before You Dive In,' according to the complaint.
Haha... Next thing you know they will be asking them to put fires out in Hillcrest... Oh the humainity!

I am glad that I am not the only sane person out there who saw on TV homes that were on fire and yet nothing else around them was burning, and thought - hmmmm....I wonder how many of these were set on fire intentionally?!
The politically correct sheople of this forum will cry, "How dare you make such a statement! Families and women and children have suffered as a result of these fires!!!"
All it takes is for some pug with a hair across his a$$ to toss a match or cigarette out of his car, and the next thing you know we have mass hysteria.
Take off the PC glasses, grab a helping of reality with both hands, and shove it down your throat...and then ask for seconds. That is the only thing that will save you and your family.

F'd homedebtor reading his insurance policy:
coverage for being stupid and ending up in foreclosure: zero dollars
coverage for fire: 100%
~
makes for a tough morals / ethics question to the home-debtor who has little chance of walking away whole from a horrible housing decision
~
in my experience the universe will deal appropriately (long term) with anyone who takes the "burn it down" approach (short term) to ending their house-debt problem
Don't most policies cover the cost to rebuild the home? If your place burns down, they pay to have the house rebuilt. They don't just cut you a check for the value of the home do they? That would make fraud way to easy.
I am on the East Coast but my wife's parents just lost their house in RB yesterday. They didn't get anything out either. When they left the fire didn't look like it was going to get to them. This is crazy.
How do things look this morning? Have the winds died down?
No worries if you have USAA insurance. Does anyone know if this will raise insurance premiums in the SD area? I am curious to know if they went up after the Cedar Fire...

Dear ignorant posters,
If you have a mortgage, the lender will probably require you to have homeowners insurance. The coverage amount only covers the cost to replace or rebuild the actual structure. They don't insure the value of the land since it doesn't burn.
If you have a $500,000 mortgage on a 2500 sf house, you might get a check for $250,000 to replace/rebuild the structure (2500 sf @ $100 psf). You would still be on the hook for mortgage.

Nothing ignorant about the post. The original speculation was that someone was seeking vengence because they were foreclosed upon or they are at the state where they are about to get foreclosed.
It is commonly known that many people in foreclosure destroy and deface their property before giving it to the bank. So speculating that some guy was so pissed that he said "f**k this whole neighborhood" and did something isn't that hard to believe.
In the winds we have been having an ember can travel 500 yards in 20 seconds. That is why you see one home destroyed while others around remain untouched. It happened 4 years ago as well.
So, a person being forclosed on lights up his home out of anger... yeah I could see maybe one or two. Come on, is there no rule here that you have to think a little before posting.
Once again, the insurance companies do not pay off your mortgage because your home is distroyed. Take a second to think about your post before posting.
This fire only benefits the home builders & remodelers. I don't believe for a second they set the fires just as I don't believe we are in Iraq for the oil.

Re: sandiego's post:
I don't think the homeowner just gets the money. The lender is coinsured and the policy is required as a condition of funding the loan to protect the lender's interest, not the buyer's. I surmise any insurance settlement check would go into an escrow account and be paid out by a trustee directly to a contractor. I think the only money that goes immediately and directly to the homeowner is for temporary living expenses.
Let's see??
(scratches chin)
months and months of inventory sitting around unsold...
am not much for conspiracy theories...
Maybe a bunch of builders facing bankruptcy got together?

Lookout,
I don't deny existence of arsonists and arson; just connecting the fires to bubble bursting sounds improbable.
i'm sure the fire chief is not a bad guy and that the thought crosses his mind as well.
Growing up, our 'local hero' volunteer firefighter got exposed as a firebug.
Including one case where he ended up with 3rd degree burns.
Till the end of my days I will never understand crazy people. Maybe thats the point. :(
The fire chief is a lesbian who caused a sexual harrassment lawsuit.

No SH@*T!
Way to make that quantum leap from 1) a few fire bugs to 2)a terrorist plot and/or a disgruntled homeowner behind in their mortgage.
Should I be nervous about "wildfires" in downtown San Diego since it is ground zero for forclosures.
Every credible story so far has attributed the original 3-4 fires (last night) to downed power lines. The only one linked to arson was the OC fire.

So just because something happens often it's always a natural event requiring no thought?
10 fires all need spark, the fact that fires are common is not enough to start a fire.
If I remember hearing correctly on Sunday afternoon they were saying the cause of the witch fire was a downed powerline. I'd HARDLY call that arson!!!

The loan docs will spell out how the proceeds of an insurance settlement will be paid out.
Thanks for the clarification. It just didn't seem logical to me that the insurance company would hand cash to the buyer if the lender was coinsured.
