WASHINGTON – Two white supremacists allegedly plotted to go on a national killing spree, shooting and decapitating black people and ultimately targeting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, federal authorities said Monday.
In all, the two men whom officials describe as neo-Nazi skinheads planned to kill 88 people – 14 by beheading, according to documents unsealed in U.S. District Court in Jackson, Tenn. The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the white supremacist community.

Advertisement The spree, which initially targeted an unidentified predominantly African-American school, was to end with the two men driving toward Obama, “shooting at him from the windows,” the court documents show.
“Both individuals stated they would dress in all white tuxedos and wear top hats during the assassination attempt,” the court complaint states. “Both individuals further stated they knew they would and were willing to die during this attempt.”

An Obama spokeswoman traveling with the senator in Pennsylvania had no immediate comment.

Sheriffs' deputies in Crockett County, Tenn., arrested the two suspects – Daniel Cowart, 20, of Bells, Tenn., and Paul Schlesselman 18, of Helena-West Helena, Ark. – Oct. 22 on unspecified charges. “Once we arrested the defendants and suspected they had violated federal law, we immediately contacted federal authorities,” said Crockett County Sheriff Troy Klyce.

The two were charged by federal authorities Monday with possessing an unregistered firearm, conspiring to steal firearms from a federally licensed gun dealer, and threatening a candidate for president.

Cowart and Schlesselman are being held without bond. Agents seized a rifle, a sawed-off shotgun and three pistols from the men when they were arrested. Authorities alleged the two men were preparing to break into a gun shop to steal more.

Jasper Taylor, city attorney in Bells, said Cowart was arrested on Wednesday. He was held for a few days in Bells, then moved over the weekend to another facility.

“It was kept under lid until today,” Taylor said.

Until his arrest, Cowart lived with his grandparents in a southern, rural part of the county, Taylor said, adding that Cowart apparently never graduated from high school. He moved away, possibly to Arkansas or Texas, then returned over the summer, Taylor said.

Attorney Joe Byrd, who has been hired to represent Cowart, did not immediately return a call seeking comment Monday. Messages left on two phone numbers listed under Cowart's name were not immediately returned.

No telephone number for Schlesselman in Helena-West Helena could be found immediately.

The court documents say the two men met about a month ago on the Internet and found common ground in their shared “white power” and “skinhead” philosophy.

The numbers 14 and 88 are symbols in skinhead culture, referring to a 14-word phrase attributed to an imprisoned white supremacist: “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children” and to the eighth letter of the alphabet, H. Two “8“s or “H“s stand for “Heil Hitler.”

Court records say Cowart and Schlesselman also bought nylon rope and ski masks to use in a robbery or home invasion to fund their spree, during which they allegedly planned to go from state to state and kill people. Agents said the skinheads did not identify the African-American school they were targeting by name.

Jim Cavanaugh, special agent in charge of the Nashville field office for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives, said authorities took the threats very seriously.

“They said that would be their last, final act – that they would attempt to kill Sen. Obama,” Cavanaugh said. “They didn't believe they would be able to do it, but that they would get killed trying.”

He added: “They seemed determined to do it. Even if they were just to try it, it would be a trail of tears around the South.”

An ATF affidavit filed in the case says Cowart and Schlesselman told investigators the day they were arrested they had shot at a glass window at Beech Grove Church of Christ, a congregation of about 60 black members in Brownsville, Tenn.

Nelson Bond, the church secretary and treasurer, said no one was at the church when the shot was fired. Members found the bullet had shattered the glass in the church's front door when they arrived for evening Bible study.

“We have been on this site for about 120 years, and we have never had a problem like this before,” said Bond, 53 and a church member for 45 years.

The investigation is continuing, and more charges are possible, Cavanaugh said. He said there's no evidence – so far – that others were willing to assist Cowart and Schlesselman with the plot.

At this point, there does not appear to be any formal assassination plan, Secret Service spokesman Eric Zahren said.

“Whether or not they had the capability or the wherewithal to carry out an attack remains to be seen,” he said.

Zahren said the statements about the assassination came out in interviews after the men were arrested last week.

The Secret Service became involved in the investigation once it was clear that an Obama assassination attempt was part of this violent far-reaching plot.

“We don't discount anything,” Zahren said, adding that it's one thing for the defendants to make statements, but it's not the same as having an organized assassination plan.

Helena-West Helena, on the Mississippi River in east Arkansas' Delta, is in one of the nation's poorest regions, trailing even parts of Appalachia in its standard of living. Police Chief Fred Fielder said he had never heard of Schlesselman.

However, the reported threat of attacking a school filled with black students worried Fielder. Helena-West Helena, with a population of 12,200, is 66 percent black. “Predominantly black school, take your pick,” he said.

Associated Press writers Erik Schelzig in Nashville, Tenn., Jon Gambrell in Little Rock, Ark., and Eileen Sullivan in Washington contributed to this report.

Nost: You being the "hardware" fan that you are, I'm sure you recognize another fine Heckler & Koch product. That is one serious telescopic sight on top.

Cowart, huh? His name should end with a "d" instead of a "t".

Shit like this makes me crazy. I don't agree with Obama and I'm not going to vote for him, but shoot him? C'mon, man.

I'm of German descent and these White Power types sicken me.

Is that an HK? Where's the magazine?

Submitted by Allan from Fallbrook on October 27, 2008 - 9:01pm.

Nost: Yup. HK91 (civilian variant of the HK G3). Magazine is out of the weapon in the picture. I don't recognize the scope setup, other than it's a big mofo.

HK makes a sniper rifle, the PSG1, that is incredible. Built on the same chassis as the G3 and a semi-auto.

Germans definitely know their stuff when it comes to beer, autos and weaponry. And how to fit completely unmentionable things into sausage casings.

And so it starts. I figured it would only be a matter of time.

I'm planning to keep my son home with me for a couple of days following the election.

If Obama does in fact win, it's going to turn the world upside down for a lot of people. San Diego is a pretty intergrated place but, the racist ignorance is still present. It's just not as in your face here.

Why are men so fascinated with guns? Sorry guys, I think it's just cause of a lack of something....What the heck do we even have guns like that available in this country?!? I'm sorry you don't need to shoot a deer with something like that, where's the sport in that? Deer doesn't have a chance in ......!

I think hunting should go back to prehistoric days...good ole bow in arrow...at least if some wacko gets ahold of that, a person has a chance to get outta the way!

cashflow: If you've ever done any precision shooting, you'd understand. Something very Zen about distance shooting. Controlling your breathing, focusing on a target 500 to 600 yards off and centering yourself before the shot.

Regarding "guns like that": You can't legally drive a Ferrari GTO in this country at the speed it really performs, yet they sell them all the same. Guns, regardless of type, are a matter of personal responsibility. I don't want to get all 2nd Amendment on you, but the government has NO right to ban guns, any more than it has the right to ban free speech (although they're trying like hell on that one, too).

I don't hunt, so I don't much the see the point in either guns or bows and arrows. If you choose to hunt and use the meat following the kill, I somewhat understand. Hunting for sport is just barbaric.

Well put. I put 5 inside a nickel back in the scouts. The challenge was 5 in a quarter. Missed a penny by a whisker. Its a great way for a kid to learn focus and control. Plus it gives a solid appreciation of the danger of a weapon. Most of the wackos grew up "shootin out back" and have no respect for weapons. I wouldnt have crossed my instructer (ex marine) for anything.

Deer are near impossible to shoot no matter what gun you have. Trust me, I am from WI. If hunting was only done with bow and arrow, you would have an uncontrolled herd. This uncontrolled herd would lead to more car accidents, higher insurance premiums in concentrated areas, starvation of the herd, etc. Not to mention, a larger percentage of deer shot with a bow and arrow are not retrieved because they can travel farther before dying.

Gun control has never proven to decrease crime. Look at England. If criminals wants to harm you, they will find a way. Only you won't be able to defend yourself because being the upstanding citizen, you turned in your guns when the government regulated/banned them. I suppose you can use a kitchen knife, but that isn't much of a challenge when the burglar has an unregistered glock. Usually anything the government implements is exactly the opposite of what should be done and causes the exact opposite of the desired affect.

DWCAP: Thanks. My dad was an ex-Marine, and I learned to shoot from a very young age. I also learned to respect the weapon, but to never treat it as anything other than a tool. Societally, we've imbued guns with such a mystique that people forget they are simply mechanical devices.

I also had a lot of confidence instilled from learning to shoot. I was comfortably shooting a .30-06 M1 Garand by the time I was 10 and that focus came in handy in many other circumstances.

I now have a 10 year old son, and I am constantly having to deal with the omnipresent thug culture that glorifies violence and misogyny and treats guns as a ticket to power and respect. It's pathetic and sad, but these are the times we live in. And, unfortunately, for many people a gun represents a single, drastic answer to a lot of problems. People like the clown in the picture above.

Isn't anyone going to counter with the standard penis size argument?

I literally ran into a deer while jogging in fog in Penasquitos Canyon. Once while driving in Connecticut a deer ran into the side of my car (head-butting it) causing considerable damage. There is definitely no shortage of deer.

My dad was a POW (held by the Japanese) in Manila during WW2 and taught me to shoot at a very young age as well. I also shot competitively (22 pistol) from a young age.

BTW Allan I got the Remi 870 and took it out to Carrillo Creek near the border last weekend. Border patrol came by and gave us some tips on "leaning in" to fire it. I mistakenly started off with magnum buck shot so my shoulder was sore after 8 rounds... Thus I've invested in the Knoxx stock to reduce recoil. We can take this conversation off-line if you like:

I considered make some snide remark about women buying expensive purses because they fat or something along those lines, but eh why? It isnt the biology of these guys that is screwed up, it is their emotional and mental states that have been stunted and corrupted. That is what drives them to tools that can bring "power" and actions that lash out at those they feel oppressed by/fearful of. Dont blame the guns for these guys being retarded, if they didnt have those guns they just try to use something else.
