When you start a thread, please remember that some people may access this site from employer provided computers/internet access. Some of the Off Topic threads may bring grief to someone who accesses it if it violates corporate policy. (I know a guy who was fired from a company I was working in for accessing "inappropriate" sites). Please try not to bring trouble to innocent readers by limiting threads to "PG-13" or better. (If a child can read it, it should be OK)

I second this motion
I oppose. The ramblings of a few nutballs (self included) should not be cause for someone getting fired, this isn't porn, it is opinions and commentary. I also have teenagers who have access to this computer which has this site bookmarked and I can say with certainty that content on this site has so little interest for them, they would never get past the primer. This stuff is worse than homework in their eyes. It would take them too long to find something rated higher than pg-13 and they can find better stuff on you tube in 30 seconds than they will find in months on this site.
Caveat Emptor.
Enginerd Note:
Ever since some of the OT posts has gradually evolved from PG to more R related, I try to avoid visiting this site from corporate networks directly.
The fact is most large companies employ crap from companies like websense which essentially monitors internet traffic. Now, you probably won't get a call from your IT dept if your company is large, unless you're doing something egregious like visiting a lot of porn sites, file sharing music, etc. So you probably don't have to worry, because most everyone at a big company spends some time on websurfing, and the IT department has a lot more things to do than just run stats on employees.
In reality, there's probably times when you surf a lot because you are literally you're stuck in tele-conference meetings that are counterproductive and rather do other things during that time, waiting for a software build, waiting for your IT dept to get some work done before you can proceed, etc, etc, etc, etc.
BUT consider this. Any legal issues you might get into, it's one less footing for your case. For example, let's say you get into some issue with your boss, and you feel like you've been unfairly terminated because of "performance". If if you were wrongfully terminated, rest assured that any pissing match with your former employer, your weblogs and web usage will make it to your case. There was a little disclaimer you signed when you first joined a company that basically states you acknowledged the company has the right to do this. So if any of you are the sue happy types, you've been warned.
I should also note...I don't feel the content here should be censored. Agreed, this isn't a porn site. If the you think some of the off-beat content would raise issues, just don't surf from corporate networks...period...
If you want to surf from work but don't want to use the corporate networks and if you have a Windows XP Pro at home and your computer is connected to the internet, my simple solution is use window remote desktop.
Leave your home computer on, enable remote desktop for your home computer, reconfigure it to run on port 80 or 443 OR reconfigure your home router to port forward inbound traffic on 80 or 443 to your desktop on port 3389, and then from work, remote desktop into your home computer for your browsing needs.
This should be more than ample information for you techie savy people to do figure out what to do. But for some of you less savy, here's a more detailed step.
Disclaimer: contrary to what people may think, I'm not an I.T. junkie. Yes, I do a lot of software, no I'm not I.T. operations and cable monkey, and no, not all software is I.T. So don't consider this expert advice or blame me for any flaws/issues you get into.
1)On your home computer, enable windows remote desktop sharing. If you can't figure this out, sorry don't bother trying to understand the rest.
2)Make windows remote desktop visible from the internet. The default port that is used is 3389 which more than likely is blocked by your corporate IT dept. Since 80 and 443 are default ports for http and https, it's open. NOTE: I won't talk about the aspects regarding security of your desktop in doing this. That's left as a exercise for the reader.
1)Easy approach. Change your personal firewall's port forwarding so that internet traffic on port 80 or 443 gets redirected to port 3389 on your personal computer at home.
2)Slightly harder: If you're link me and purchased that cheap-ass router from Fry's which doesn't support port forwarding, then reconfigure your home computer's remote desktop to listen on port 80 and 443. Here's a link on how.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306759
3) Make note of the internet address where your home computer is on. If you're using DSL or cable modem, this is most likely a dynamically assigned address. So everytime you reboot your computer or router, you probably need to check if your ipaddress has changed.
Alternatively you can use a dynamic DNS service that automatically binds dynamically changing IP addresses to a host name. A free dynamic dns service is provided by
http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/
4) From work, just launch the remote desktop client
The computer name to connect to will be
(ipaddress):80 or (ipaddress):443
Once you log into your home computer, happy surfing.
5)Lastly, making remote desktop secure and less hackable for you extra paranoid types, is left as an exercise to the reader.

I also oppose. Come on, how many kids do you think really read this blog? I bet they would fit in the drawer of my desk. I have no problem with anyone using off-color language in their posts either. We are, after all, adults, and would likely use such language in our daily conversations.
Also, where I work they have a pretty restrictive filter in place to limit web use. You-tube is inaccessible, as would be any porn site. I have extreme doubts that this filter would be able to detect a questionable blog post. When I am on a research block (as I am now) sometimes I perform experiments where an antibody has to sit on a slide for an hour or more. Those are the days when I do a lot of Pigginton reading at work, and I have never heard from our IT department.
tg - read today's active forum topics and you'll see what he means.
Sorry - Have to agree w/TG. Kids will look at this for a second and close the window to open youtube or a video game site. This is of no interest at all to teens.
I don't think many of them even heard of Gilligan and if they did, they'd think it's some oldie show - like when we were kids and how we thought of Ozzie and Harriet.
They'd have to do a lot of reading on this site to get to anything good - at best - and way quicker to get to R rated stuff on other sites.
Now at work - I'd say they'd have a problem w/any site you go to. Get back to work and surf on your own time attitude.
coop, I just read all the threads, I think you are referring to the thread regarding impeachment. I don't read the political threads normally but that one is a little over the top but it is kinda stupid and will likely fade away. The ginger and mary anne thread is harmless (one post might be a tad much, but it's no big deal), milder than anything on mtv, network tv, radio and half of the internet, plus I posted on it and dammit, I like it.
In the next two weeks the freddy/fannie thing is going to blow up. Interest rates and loan requirements are poised for a big change, we may see a price crash in housing over the next 60-90 days, then we wont be bored here at all, we will go back to our regularly scheduled reading. We are like soldiers a few days from a big battle, we are all a little bored in anticipation and goofing off a litle. No worries.
Having a feeling?
huh, tguy?
Having that something's about to unravel feeling again?
I am pretty much always having that feeling these days. Not in a negative way.
It is time
Time for a shift
Time for letting go of attachments
Time for all of us to come together and love and support each other.
The 12 year olds who think spending a day at Lou's Records is cool love this site.
Enorah,
I agree. I feel it. It is time for a change. Now that the bubble has burst, the greed bubble, I am hoping the oil bubble will cause what really needs to happen-- the transmutation from oil to something that will be an improvement for the environment and the economy. Time for the awakening.
Yeah, well, I need a cup of coffee first.
Then I can be AWAKE.
Sorry, two kids. I'm dragging this morning. Oh, is it afternoon? Crap.
What we're we talking about?
I am surely not 12, but I'll spend a day at Lou's AND I love this site. Lou's is awesome - the last remaining vestige of record shops in San Diego.
future piggington titles
NSFW = not safe for work.
So if you think that a topic might not be seen as proper by work types, put that into the title.
With the advent of 3G, wouldn't employees bring their own laptops to work and surf to their heart content?
I now that 3G is not as fast corporate wirelines but it's good enough for eBay, CL and, of course, Piggington.
I run my own business, but if I were an employee at a corporation that tracts Internet usage, I would bring my own private laptop and Internet service to work.
BTW, FLU, can you tether a Laptop to the iPhone w/ 3G? I'm trying to find out.
Not sure. Sorry, I use the remote desktop option.
Sorry, tg, didn't mean to send you on a goose chase. I was referring to the one about providing a certain brain-containing part of the body to a certain groinal region of the current commander in cheif akin to Lewinsky and Cclinton.
I come here for finance/housing info, and though I'd prefer swearing not be in forum titles, I'd agree that kids are uncommon here.
I also don't mind a few OT posts, but there is a point where off topic, should become offsite and that one in particular is what came to mind when I read this.
OT to this post, there also seems to be something funky with the active forum topics at the right of this page.
No problem coop, I agree with you about that one in particular. I just reread my post about thinking the election crap would go away with the fannie freddy debacle and a quick check on the right, all the active topics are related to r/e and finance (except this one), suprise, the wait is over.
I have also found the active topics looking funny sometimes (vanishing or not accurate as to being active), logging out and logging in solves the problem sometimes.
