Cheaper and more functional isn't always "better." I think a certain large segment of the market will always be brainwashed into buying Apple crippleware.

This being said, iOS vs Android is just replacing a gimped OS with a less gimped, but still crippled OS. At least Android is easier to root, and doesn't prevent sideloading by default.

I don't know about the end of Apple's dominance.

At least in the smart phone and tablet market (but not so in desktops/laptops) Apple's prices are the same as competitors' products. If you're an average Joe, why take a chance and pay the same price for second best?

As far at laptops/desktops are concerned, prices have dropped to where they are affordable to everyone and computers are no longer a luxury. People are willing to pay a little more for that "affordable luxury" (the Starbucks concept).

Overall Apple has a good concept and the economies of scale to effectively compete.

I'm curious to see, when Apple enters the TV market, how they will price their products to compete with Samsung and LG.

Seriously Brain ?

Look it was just a matter of time before the iclones came, I can't believe MS fell for (must make hardware) Idea.

Being that Apple is/was about 15% of the Nas, this could be interesting.

Nothing is that cool.

Not true. Apple's phones cost more than others unsubsidized. You, as a contract signer, do not see the difference because AT&T/VZW subsidize i-phone for you so that it seems like it costs the same as others.

However AT&T/VZW are suffering because of the massive subsidies that they are doling out to smartphone users so I question how long $200 iphones will last!

Apple is also one of the most overpriced stocks since the tech crash of 2000. Is now the time to short that S.O.B? Or there are probably better (similarly overpriced) tech stocks to short? I don't follow the tech market. What do you think FLU?

LOL, and what percentage of the general population considers it gimped?

What percentage would know what to do with a non-gimped phone? I hear a Nigerian Prince has an ungimped phone, he's willing to ship it to you, just wire him $50 okay?

You fail to see that he thinks the general population are rock dumb stupid.

A little perspective is probably in order here. The largest company (by market value) in the world, just reported sales and earnings more than 20% higher than the previous year. It's net income for the last 4 quarters is in the neighborhood of $8 billion, which will probably keep it in second place in the list of most profitable companies. It's more than double the size of it's nearest competitor in it's sector in both market value and profit.

There might be evidence out there that Apple's dominance might be declining. But that evidence can't be found in yesterday's earnings report.

One word.

Samsung...

And it's just getting started just with the S3.
That's why there's all the lawsuits.

I'm waiting for the iphone 5 launch and some more details on what happens with the entire Samsung/Apple spat before deciding anything....If they flub the iphone 5 launch, it will be very very interesting.....
Apple's in a very interesting situation, because the timing of Android Jellybean release and no iphone5 in the near future...well, very interesting....

What many Apple investors who just look at these stellar numbers in isolation miss, is the fact that those great revenue/profits/margins are in large part the result of a gift from AT&T/Verizon/Sprint; which will not keep giving forever ...

Lol...Netflix.

I just remember a few month ago, analysts were talking about netflix being oversold, and that they would recover. Looks like it ain't gonna happen.

With all the competition from the likes like Amazon, Google, and Apple, with streaming movies/content, and from competition from cable companies directly, what is Netflix gonna offer than the other big three can't?

As long as AAPL has a product that the mobile's customers want, they'll keep paying. Did APPL make pretty sweet deals with them? Absolutely. One of the reasons they are among the biggest companies in the world is that they drive the hardest bargains. They are notoriously difficult with both vendors and customers alike. That won't change. But the mobiles are making money selling iPhones. Unless other manufactures make a device that consumers want more than they want the iPhone, that dynamic is unlikely to change. (disclosure here, I've never had an iPhone, nor any other Apple product.)

Netflix has had an almost 80% decline in value since it's peak a bit over a year ago. To put it's current price in perspective, it's still selling at more than 2 1/2 times the P/E of Apple. Which one has better growth prospects? Kind of makes the claim that Apple is the most over-priced tech stock since the bubble seem a bit silly.

Do you expect Jellybean to penetrate faster than ICS? Why is jellybean and the timing of the release important and how is the situation different from last year's release of ICS (which was followed by iOS5 and iphone 4s, similar to this year's iOS6 and iphone 5)?

Like flu said, Samsung. Apple sells 26M iPhone. Samsung sells 19M GS3 alone. They have a lot more phones than just the GS3. In total, they sell over 2X the amount of iPhone. Also keep in mind that the GS3 just came out. So the market penetration is nothing like iPhone 4S. Also keep in mind that Samsung churn out phones a lot more quickly than Apple does. So their product is always fresh.

WRT to AAPL's market share, it's the growth expectation that gives it the market share it currently command. It doesn't have the most profit or the largest revenue. If earning growth decline, which it did, investors will take a pause and reevaluate. AAPL have been enjoying the market that have very little good competition to its products. However, going forward, the competition is definitely heating up. Which causes uncertainty about continual earning growth.

I personally think this is the beginning of the end of Apple's dominance. Android is doing a fine job declaring its dominance. We'll see how Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 does over the next couple of years but competitions is definitely good for consumer but not good for Apple.

I'm somewhat of a techie. I know how to jailbreak/root my phone.

I've fallen out of love with my iPhone, even though I haven't fallen in love with another phone, yet
http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/25/opinion/ob...

I had an affair with a Samsung Android, but, out of convenience and habit, I'm back to the iPhone to stay for the time being (I like to easily save the image on my screen).

I'm willing to dump the iPhone if a hotter product comes along.

Galaxy S3 and other new Android ICS phones have the screen shot feature built in now. Galaxy s3 beats pretty much everything out there right now. The IPhone5 should offer some strong competition but if the new connector rumors are true it's going to need to be special.

The average American is rock-dumb stupid, or at least so uneducated as to reasonable approximate that status. Sorry to say, wish it were different.

Exactly. Sprint is learning the lesson the hard way: http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/26/sprin...

AT&T also learned that lesson, which is why they're starting to back Windows Phone now.

Gotta love apple...

Deja vu? (Recall older generation Macs when apple made Macs incompatible with most devices)....

This is as fun to watch as the browser market share race. Here's the press release that article pulls numbers from:

There's a pretty graph at the bottom if you like that sort of thing.

Why should automakers need to include ANY connector in their cars, other than 12V and AUX IN? Standard across phones, rather than designing for a brand poisoned by the legacy of a sick old man.

Also, kudos to all automakers who still include a DIN form-factor stereo -- this allows for replacement of electronics as the car ages.

I would add a USB port to the list, but otherwise agree. Regardless of brand, adding proprietary wired phone connections to cars never sounded like a good idea to me.

Agreed, though mostly for drives containing music. And please give them enough ampacity to power a mechanical 2,5" drive.
