anxiety level.

disclaimer: I'm generally a nervous guy. I've always predicted disaster and always been wrong. I never bought a house, got a car loan. Just basically work ., give legal advice, save, very conservative and worried, even kept my 401k all cash for 10 years or so. I am, in short, unusually conservative and distrustful of the system for a middle aged dude. I am extremely anxious about the economy even though frankly it hasn't affected me yet at all. However, i am truly fearful that something bad is coming our way, something not normal. I've felt this way for years, but only a dull, laughing sense. Now I'm afraid. I wonder if people who are actually losing wealth or are having trouble servicing debt are feeling even worse than me? I am told I just think too much, and certainly, read too much, and there's some truth to it. But im wondering if the level of anxiety is ramping up in society and if that in itself could trigger some bad events. a bankrupt state, social unrest, I don't know. However, on the lighter side, I am going to make a bold and unprecedented prediction; marijuana will be legalized and taxed in CA by 2010 to help balance the budget. it will become a tourist destination and there will be marijuana bars everywhere. you heard it here first. Housing will start to rebound at the same time these marijuana bars take root.

Well, I could use a joint right now!

But I don't think what you're rambling about is going to save CA's economy.

Are you high NOW?

Submitted by scaredycat on October 9, 2008 - 10:24pm.

no. i am waiting for marijuana to be legalized before starting again. I'm just drunk. I haven't smoked any pot for 25 years. It's going to be really great once we get going with the pot program. i hear pot has improved in the last few decades. even if it doesn't save the economy, i think people will feel better.

Submitted by patientlywaiting on October 9, 2008 - 10:25pm.

I'm all for marijuana in California. It's fine in the Netherlands and it would be great here.

Vegas style casinos and legalized prostitution would also help the economy.

San Francisco is the real New Amsterdam. I love it, publicdefender.

I am with you on the sense that things were totally ungrounded for the last 10 years. There needed to be a reorientation. That's occurring. It's rough while it lasts, but it's good that it's happening, and things will be better than the last 10 years when it's done. Yes, there will be less bling, but there will be plenty of good food, good teachers, decent (but smaller) homes.... Not a bad world, I think, if our politicians don't screw it up totally by trying to prevent/minimize the changes.

so here's the thing. I was drinking with this guy I know complaining about the end of the world and how the country was going out of business. he said, dude, you are way off track. this is the best thing that ever happened. this is going to be the coolest decade since the 1960s to come of age. our kids are going to be from the COOL decade. after years of crap, we are going to mutate into a cool country again. he was slightly intoxicated but the point is, maybe we are about to enter a new age of coolness in the USA. I can actually sense achange in the mental workings of jurors in court. people are becoming more open. I believe I can read minds to some extent (get strong vibes off people) and i feel that people's vulnerability and sense of something big happening is changing people. I was previously getting a lot of mean vines of people, say 2-5 years ago. I am sensing openness now. less meanness, less judgmental crap. i have no idea wher eit all ends, and Im afraid, but it is fascinating. maybe this is the 60s

does anyone have any idea how much alcohol contributes to the state economy, including liquor licenses, etc. ? could pot be a multi billion dolalr industry in CA?

Actually, I would put the odds at about 50% that we get hit with a terror attack within the week.

It'll be interesting to see whether society falls apart or whether people begin to embrace the things that are important in life and let all the materialism fade into oblivion.

I think it will be a rough transition, but I can see folks pulling together during these rough times. I've actually been feeling less stressed lately because prices are coming down, I'm still employed (for the moment), and I feel it will be easier to afford things here in SD in the future.

However, I have been having some disturbing dreams. In these dreams, plants release chemicals that cause humans to commit suicide en masse. At first, us humans think the mass suicides are some kind of terrorist attack, but eventually we learn that plants are just banding together to protect the planet from global warming. You might want to buy a gas mask and some herbicide just to be safe.

is there any relationship between the possibility of the world being at an envirnmental tipping point and the finance system reach some sort fo tipping point?

Submitted by kicksavedave on October 10, 2008 - 8:26am.

I'm 100% in favor of legalizing Weed, its 1000 times less harmful than Tobacco and Alcohol. But the downside of CA legalizing it while every other state does not, is that eventually every pothead in the country will migrate here to live their lifestyle. Unfortunately, potheads as a whole are not the worlds most productive members of society... Bill Clinton and your high school theatre teacher who you got stoned with in 1983 notwithstanding :)

I'm actually cheering on a recession/depression as I think drastic cut in consumption on a global scale is the only thing that will save us from total environmental catastrophe.

I had to leave Cali. Moved out to the mountains where I feel a little safer. Requires fewer bullets to keep the perimeter here clear - should there ever bee anarchy and looting.

After all I'm anxvariety! A variety of anxiety!

Try buying some bulk rice online - and see how far they're back ordered - that could really spook you!

i doubt people will move here just for the pot. instead, they wil come on road trips and take it home with them.

Nothing will save us from environmental catastrophe, if that's what the planet has planned for us. I'm all for reducing harmful emissions to zero, but unfortunately, A) that won't happen anytime soon without a near collapse of civilization (in which case many Piggs would likely be dead), and B) even if it did happen, it won't stop the planet from going through its cycles. At some point, we WILL go extinct, unless we first get a substantial number of people off this rock.

I think most people are a little stressed about the future. But other than the Mad Max scenario, I like to think there's also a possibility that this economic upheaval will eventually be seen as the point of a profound change for the better. An efficient, intelligently-run government that doesn't stick its nose where it doesn't belong, and doesn't bow to corporate interests. A guy can dream.

However, even if that happens, there can be no sense of safety until the end of widespread Islamic extremism. How (or if) that will happen is anyone's guess. Maybe the start will be when the need for oil dries up, and certain middle eastern countries who's cultures never evolved (but which are artificially propped up by money) will go back to the stone age where they belong, and leave the rest of us in peace.

That was way too profound for 9am. All I really meant to say was, "legalize it."

Can I suggest one other idea - go buy a cheap deisel truck and a trailer. Should the crap hit the fan, you can move wherever you want and be self contained. A generator is nice too - I have a 3500watt Yamaha. Yamaha and Hondas are extremely quiet - and why they're more expensive - $1500-2000 for a 3500 watt. Traditional generators are very loud and brain rattling - plus they'll announce your presense!

I would love to see America become the land of "survival of the fittest" again and not "survival of the fattest" or "survival of the financially irresponsible". If what's coming is going to help in this sense, bring it!

Scaredycat you get a gold star for the day. Our economic system is a wholly owned subsidiary of our ecological system. If TPTB did not bring it down it would have eaten itself. Our financial system is in no way related to the physical realties of the planet. Let's just say it's about to get real.

The only way they could keep the game going is by massive population reduction.

I wonder what kind of new system they will plug us into next?

I think scaredycat needs to be mentally evaluated and on meds. I say this because he can read VIBES from people. Classic signs of mental illness. However, you are right, the world and the financial system are falling apart. I just keep singing REM's song "It the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine!"

Since I see it leading to a six page debate I will refrain from sharing my socio-political views. You're welcome.

On the topic of booze, I would like to draw everyones attention to TJ' six dollar vodka.
On a dollar per drunk basis, it kills two buck chuck.

And its pretty damn good,

Before everyone goes out and gets stoned thinking about a laid back California dont forget that not everyone shares your dream of utopia.

The Iranians would be more than happy to see a dope head America. Yeah, the Iranians would love to light us up with some of their new nuclear toys.

I have a song for every occasion. When I see McCain or Palin the Talking Heads Road to Nowhere song comes to mind. When I trade stocks I sing the Beatles Don't Let Me Down and when I see a new foreclosure, it's Queen's Another One Bites the Dust (also applies to bank failures).

79 people dead in TJ so far this month over drug wars...like I said, break out the Molsen Golden and let's have a blue collar bbq. I'll even invite a plumber to make sure the toilets don't get stopped up and ruin the party.

Drugs suck.

dogs sniff each other, people read vibes off each other. we're mammals. that's the way we survive. look around. open your senses. there are vibes all over the place.

they used to shoot people during prohibition. once pot is legalized, no one will be killing each other over pot.

i doubt iran will attack because the military provides meths to its pilots, so there will always be someone in control of the guns who's hypervigilant...

There were a lot more killed in the prison riot than the government admitted and the same with the number of murders committed in TJ. They do not want to completely destroy tourism there.

I wouldn't hold my breath for MJ to be legalized, though I would like to see it happen also.

There are too many people making too much $$ by keeping it illegal, and too few people who would benefit financially from it becoming legal.

I am pretty convinced that the only reason it became illegal in the first place is that it enhances sex so much, uptight 1930s America thought women would become uncontrollable (gasp!).

Submitted by Ricechex on October 11, 2008 - 6:53pm.

Actually, I heard that it became illegal because there are many things you can make with hemp. Rope, paper and other supplies. It is cheap and can grow just about anywhere. I thought it was the logging companies that lobbyed congress to make it illegal. They didn't want competition. They would rather cut down trees. Don't know if this is all true, but it seems believable.
